Avoiding the fast dog-like zombies was crazy fun this time around, when I didn’t have the shotgun to fall back on. Meanwhile, this time around, when I was playing it only with the gravity gun, my entire mentality while playing the levels was one of avoidance. The fighting got tedious and repetitive after a while, and it felt like they were just repeating the same “oh shit” moments over and over. When I played it originally, I was trying to kill things mostly a single saw-blade that I was trying to carry around with the gravity gun, and occasionally switching to the pistol to kill head-crabs, and switching to the shotgun to kill the really dangerous enemies. I think one reason why I thought it went on too long originally, but enjoyed replaying with the only the gravity gun as a weapon is the change in mind-set. Just long enough to get my pulse rate up but didn’t outlast its welcome. It was a real shot in the arm for my money – a real changeup from the relatively pedestrian run-and-gun that came before (and, well, after) but maybe this change was too jarring for most people? I found it almost like a funhouse ride, or a good scary movie. To be honest, I’m surprised Ravenholm is so disliked. It was a great Privateer type space sim, but with WASD+mouse, it just lacked the satisfaction of the joystick controls for space sims of the past. It’s functional, but not satisfying.īut then, I felt the same way about the controls in Freelancer too. WASD+mouse just doesn’t make a good way to control vehicles in any game. Similar to the vehicle sections in the PC version of the GTA games. Controlling the vehicles using WASD+mouse was fine, but never all that much fun. Plus as others have pointed out above, the 360 controller is really well suited for the vehicle sections of the game, which provided a nice change of pace in the PC version, but are actually FUN in the 360 version. The first time through I thought Ravenholm went on for far too long, but this time I was trying to do the achievement for getting through it only with a gravity gun, and I had a blast all the way through. And I was kinda surprised that it feels like a fresh game again. I’ve been playing Half Life 2 again as part of my brother’s copy of the Orange Box on 360.

They’re excellent the first time through, but I didn’t really have much fun on a second playthrough for any of them. I enjoyed the Half Life series on PC, but I never enjoyed replaying any of the games.
